Project Face Mask

Masculine face masks ready to mail to Ohio and Massachusetts

for the men in the family.

Some had 4 pleats, especially the ones after I got my new sewing machine.

It's totally mechanical and can sew right over all the bumps and lumps.

Others had only 2 pleats (My old machine just couldn't do it.).

These cloud face masks had yellow backing with orange polka dots.

Fun to wear!

Elastic was the hardest thing to find, worse than toilet paper.

I had a terrible time with my old (new 4 years ago) machine.

It replaced my really old (50+ years) Singer which worked--until it didn't.

In the midst of this project, I ordered a Janome 3500.

It's completely mechanical. No digital elements!

I love it. It's a workhorse and acts just like my very old one--

which I loved.

15 Minute Pillowcases for the Holidays

I started a project through our Living & Learning Committee here at Laurel Ridge to sew a couple dozen holiday pillowcases for the children and teens at the local shelter or food bank.  I was able to make almost 24 kits from my stash and donations from generous residents. The kit included 27 inches of a 42-45 inch wide fabric for the body, 9 inches for the cuff and 2-4 inches for the trim.  Made from 3 coordinating fabrics, it makes a nice pillowcase with two seams, one straight and one going around a corner (twice if you make French seams like we did).  Often called Burrito pillowcases, I called them Sushi pillowcases because you roll up the body and seam the cuff and trim altogether like a sushi roll.  Then you need to pull the fabric from the center to reveal the whole body of the pillowcase.  Next I use a chopstick to poke out the corners from the side seams.

The Community Activities Committee plans to buy pillows for them.  Those children will enjoy a fluffy new pillow and a bright winter-themed pillowcase to send them off to sleep for a long, winter's night.  Thanks to all the sewists, especially the new one!

Jean had us add glitter to some tape backing to make the sparkle.

It was an inlay technique using a precision die cut platform.
